England: Third place

How England performed

England reached the semi-finals of the 1968 UEFA European Championship, staged in Italy between 5 and 10 June 1968, with Alf Ramsey as manager and Bobby Moore as captain. Their first fixture of the finals was the semi-final against Yugoslavia on 5 June, and it was settled by a single goal: Džajić scored in the 87th minute to give Yugoslavia a 1–0 win and end England's hopes of reaching the final.

Three days later England faced the Soviet Union in the third-place play-off and won 2–0, with R. Charlton scoring in the 39th minute and Hurst adding a second in the 63rd. That victory secured third place. England's record at the finals was one win and one defeat from two matches, with two goals scored and one conceded, the only goal against them being the late winner for Yugoslavia.
