The story so far
The Lionesses are the reigning European champions, having won the UEFA Women's Championship at Wembley in 2022 and retained it in Switzerland in 2025, both under Sarina Wiegman. Those are their two titles in the ten editions on our records. They were also runners-up in 1984 under Martin Reagan and in Finland in 2009 under Hope Powell, reached the semi-finals in 1995 under Ted Copeland and in 2017 under Mark Sampson, and finished fourth in 1987. In the matches on our records England have won 20, drawn five and lost 15, and Mead leads the scorers with seven, ahead of Russo on six and Taylor on five.
Between the early finals and the modern triumphs came a long lean spell. England went out at the group stage in Germany in 2001, at home in 2005 and in Sweden in 2013, all under Powell, with the 2013 side failing to win any of their three matches. The run to the final in Finland in 2009 was the exception in that period. The recovery began with Sampson's semi-final in the Netherlands in 2017, when England won four of their five matches, before Wiegman's side won all six on home soil in 2022.
The 2025 defence in Switzerland was harder going, with three wins, two draws and a defeat across six matches, but it ended with the trophy retained, making England champions at back-to-back tournaments. Wiegman has now led England to two European titles from her two tournaments in charge on our records, and they go into the next edition as holders.
