England: Semi-finals

How England performed

Captained again by Clare Connor, England reached the semi-finals of the 2005 Women's World Cup in South Africa, improving on their group-stage exit in 2000. All seven group matches were played in Pretoria. The opening match against Australia ended in a no result with England on 169/7 from 50 overs, and the final group fixture against West Indies was abandoned without a ball bowled. In between, England beat Sri Lanka by 214 runs after dismissing them for 70, and Ireland by 128 runs. India won by 7 wickets after bowling England out for 139, but England responded by chasing down hosts South Africa's 174/6 to win by 8 wickets. New Zealand then reached 180/5 with seven balls to spare to win by 5 wickets.

The semi-final brought a second meeting with Australia, at Potchefstroom. England were bowled out for 158 in 49.4 overs, and Australia reached 159/5 in 47 overs to win by 5 wickets. England finished with three wins, two matches without a result and three defeats.
