England: Runners-up

How England performed

England travelled to India for the 1978 Women's World Cup as holders, having won the title on home soil in 1973, and finished as runners-up under captain Mary Pilling. Their tournament consisted of three group-stage matches in less than a fortnight. They began strongly at Eden Gardens, dismissing India for 63 in 39.3 overs and reaching their target for the loss of one wicket to win by 9 wickets. A week later, at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium, New Zealand were bowled out for 157 and England won by 7 wickets in 40.3 overs.

The final match, against Australia at the same ground, went the other way. England could manage only 96/8 from their 50 overs, and Australia reached 100/2 in 31.3 overs to win by 8 wickets. Two wins and one defeat left England as runners-up, unable to retain the title they had won five years earlier.
