England: Runners-up

How England performed

England were runners-up for the second successive tournament at the 1982 Women's World Cup in New Zealand, captained by Susan Goatman. A lengthy group stage brought 12 matches, beginning with a tie against New Zealand in Auckland, where both sides finished on 147. England won seven group games, including three against an International XI by 132 runs, 9 wickets and 113 runs, and beat New Zealand in both later meetings, by 7 and 5 wickets. India were beaten by 4 wickets and, later, by 10 wickets in Nelson after being dismissed for 61, although India won the other meeting by 47 runs in Wanganui.

Australia were the toughest opposition. They won by 44 runs in New Plymouth and by 6 wickets in Wellington, and the third group meeting in Christchurch was tied on 167. The sides met again in the final at Lancaster Park, where England made 151/5 and Australia reached 152/7 with an over to spare to win by 3 wickets. England finished with seven wins, two ties and four defeats.
