England: Semi-finals

How England performed

England arrived in India for the 1997 Women's World Cup as holders and reached the semi-finals. Group A started with a narrow 7-run win over South Africa in Hyderabad in a match of 20 overs a side, before England's batting took control with three big totals: 376/2 to beat Pakistan by 230 runs in Vijayawada, 301/4 to beat Denmark by 194 runs and 324/3 to beat Ireland by 208 runs in Pune. Australia ended that run in Nagpur, bowling England out for 95 and winning by 8 wickets in 26.5 overs.

In the quarter-final at Mohali, Sri Lanka were dismissed for 104 and England won by 9 wickets in 22.1 overs. The semi-final against New Zealand at Chepauk ended the defence: New Zealand made 175/6 and England were bowled out for 155 in 47.5 overs, losing by 20 runs. England finished with five wins and two defeats, four years after winning the title on home soil.
