The story so far

England and the Women's World Cup

England Women have won the 50-over World Cup four times in the 13 editions on our records: at home in 1973 and 1993, in Australia in 2009, and at Lord's in 2017 under Mark Robinson, when they won eight of their nine matches. They have also been runners-up four times, in 1978, 1982, 1988 and 2022, and finished third in India in 2013. In 12 of the 13 tournaments England finished in the top four, the one exception coming in 2000.

The harder stretches have been the waits between titles rather than outright slumps. After the opening win of 1973, England finished second at three successive tournaments, in 1978, 1982 and 1988, before winning again on home soil in 1993. The 16 years that followed brought semi-final exits in India in 1997 and South Africa in 2005 either side of the one genuine low, a group-stage departure in New Zealand in 2000 with three wins from seven. The 2009 title in Australia, with six wins from seven, ended that wait.

Since the 2017 triumph, England have stayed in contention without adding a fifth title. They reached the final in New Zealand in 2022, finishing runners-up after five wins and four defeats, and the most recent edition, in India and Sri Lanka in 2025, ended in the semi-finals under Charlotte Edwards after five wins from eight matches. That keeps intact England's run of top-four finishes at every tournament since the 2000 group-stage exit.
