England: Group stage
How England performed
The Lionesses went through qualifying for the 2013 UEFA Women's Championship in Sweden unbeaten, with six wins and two draws from eight fixtures, 22 goals scored and two conceded. The campaign included a 6–0 win in Croatia and home victories over the Netherlands (1–0) and Serbia (2–0).
At the finals, Hope Powell's side, captained by Casey Stoney, lost their opening fixture 3–2 to Spain: Aluko equalised in the eighth minute and Bassett levelled again at 2–2 in the 89th, but Spain scored the winner in stoppage time. Duggan's stoppage-time equaliser earned a 1–1 draw with Russia, but a 3–0 defeat by France ended the Lionesses' tournament at the group stage. They finished with a draw and two defeats, three goals scored and seven conceded, a considerable fall from the runners-up finish of 2009.
