The story so far

England and the Women's World Cup

The Lionesses have appeared at six Women's World Cups on our records and reached their first final in 2023, finishing runners-up in Australia and New Zealand under Sarina Wiegman. That followed third place in Canada in 2015 under Mark Sampson and fourth place in France in 2019 under Phil Neville, making three successive tournaments with a top-four finish under three different coaches. In the matches on our records White is the leading scorer with seven goals, ahead of Williams on five and Russo and K. Smith on four each.

The earlier record was steadier but more modest. Each of the first three appearances on our records ended in the quarter-finals: in Sweden in 1995 under Ted Copeland, then in China in 2007 and Germany in 2011 under Hope Powell, after a gap with no England entry between 1995 and 2007. The 2011 exit came without a defeat, with two wins and two draws from four matches. The step up came in 2015, when Sampson's side won five of their seven matches to finish third, and it has been sustained at every tournament since.

The 2023 campaign brought five wins, a draw and a defeat from seven matches, and the runners-up finish is England's best at a Women's World Cup on our records. The next tournament is in Brazil in 2027, where the Lionesses will aim to go one step further than in 2023.
