How England performed

The Lionesses' qualifying campaign for the 2001 UEFA Women's Championship in Germany brought five wins, a draw and two defeats. They beat Switzerland twice and Portugal once, drew 2–2 in Portugal, and lost both fixtures against Norway, 3–0 at home and 8–0 away, before securing two wins over Ukraine in the autumn of 2000. S. Smith was the leading scorer with five goals.

At the finals, Hope Powell's side, captained by Mo Marley, opened with a 1–1 draw against Russia, Banks scoring on the stroke of half-time. They then lost 4–0 to Sweden and 3–0 to the hosts, Germany, and went out at the group stage with a draw and two defeats from three matches, one goal scored and eight conceded. It was a step back from the semi-final finish of 1995.
