England: Group stage
How England performed
England hosted the 2005 UEFA Women's Championship, with Hope Powell as manager and Faye White as captain. The Lionesses opened with a 3–2 win over Finland: an own goal and Barr put them 2–0 ahead, Finland fought back to 2–2 with two minutes left, and Carney scored the winner in stoppage time.
Williams then gave England the lead from the penalty spot against Denmark early in the second half, but Denmark scored in the 80th and 88th minutes to win 2–1. In the final group fixture Sweden scored in the third minute and won 1–0, and England's tournament ended at the group stage. They finished with one win and two defeats from three matches, scoring four goals and conceding five, the same group-stage finish as in 2001.
