The story so far
England and the Women's Nations League
The UEFA Women's Nations League began in 2023-24 and now doubles as the qualifying route for major tournaments. The Lionesses have played in both editions on our records, each time in League A, and have yet to win the competition. They finished second in League A Group 1 in the 2023 edition and second in League A Group 3 in 2025. Across the 12 matches on our records England have won seven, drawn one and lost four.
There has been no slump to speak of, but nor has there yet been a breakthrough. The first campaign brought four wins and two defeats from six matches; the second produced three wins, a draw and two defeats, a slightly lower return that again left England as group runners-up. The goals have been shared around: Bronze leads the scorers in the matches on our records with five, ahead of Beever-Jones on four, with Russo, Mead and Hemp on three each.
That leaves the Lionesses still chasing a first Nations League title after two editions, with two second-place group finishes to show for their efforts. Given the competition's role as the route into major tournaments, consistent results in League A matter beyond the competition itself. England's next campaign will be their third, and the target is to improve on two group stages that have both ended a place short of top spot.
