England: League stage

How England performed

England arrived in India for the 2023 World Cup as holders, having won the title in 2019, but their defence ended in the league stage. Jos Buttler captained the side, with Matthew Mott as head coach. The opening match in Ahmedabad set the tone, as New Zealand chased England's 282/9 for the loss of one wicket to win by 9 wickets. A 137-run win over Bangladesh in Dharamshala followed, but England then lost five matches in a row.

Afghanistan won by 69 runs in Delhi, and South Africa made 399/7 in Mumbai before dismissing England for 170 in 22 overs to win by 229 runs. Sri Lanka won by 8 wickets in Bangalore after bowling England out for 156, India defended 229/9 to win by 100 runs in Lucknow, and Australia won by 33 runs in Ahmedabad. England finished with wins over the Netherlands by 160 runs in Pune and Pakistan by 93 runs at Eden Gardens, ending with three wins and six defeats from nine matches.
