England: Runners-up

How England performed

Under captain Mike Gatting and head coach Micky Stewart, England reached the final of the 1987 World Cup in India and Pakistan, improving on their semi-final exit of 1983. Their Group B campaign began with a 2-wicket win over West Indies, achieved with three balls to spare, and they later beat West Indies again by 34 runs at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium. Sri Lanka were beaten twice, by 108 runs after England had made 296/4 and by 8 wickets at the Nehru Stadium. Pakistan proved the difficult opponents of the group, winning both meetings, by 18 runs and by 7 wickets.

In the semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium, England made 254/6 and dismissed India for 219 to win by 35 runs. The final against Australia at Eden Gardens was decided by a narrow margin: chasing 254, England finished on 246/8 from their 50 overs and lost by 7 runs. They finished as runners-up with five wins and three defeats from eight matches.
