England: Pool stage

How England performed

England hosted the 1999 World Cup, with matches also staged in Wales, Scotland, Ireland and the Netherlands, but went out at the pool stage, a step back from the quarter-final they had reached in 1996. Alec Stewart captained the side and David Lloyd was head coach. Pool A began well: Sri Lanka were dismissed for 204 at Lord's and England won by 8 wickets, before Kenya were beaten by 9 wickets in Canterbury.

The first significant setback came at The Oval, where England were bowled out for 103 chasing 226 and lost to South Africa by 122 runs. A 7-wicket win over Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge followed, but England's campaign closed with defeat to India at Edgbaston, where India made 232/8 and dismissed England for 169 to win by 63 runs. Three wins and two defeats from five matches were not enough to progress, and the hosts' tournament ended in the pool stage.
