How England performed

England's 2011 World Cup campaign in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh was full of close finishes. Under captain Andrew Strauss and head coach Andy Flower, they opened Group B by chasing 293 to beat the Netherlands by 6 wickets in Nagpur. In Bangalore, England replied to India's 338 with 338/8 and the match was tied. Days later at the same ground, Ireland chased England's 327/8 to win by 3 wickets. England then defended 171 to beat South Africa by 6 runs in Chennai, but lost to Bangladesh by 2 wickets in Chittagong. An 18-run win over West Indies in Chennai, defending 243, took them into the knockout stage.

The quarter-final against Sri Lanka in Colombo was one-sided. England made 229/6, and Sri Lanka reached their target without losing a wicket, in 39.3 overs, to win by 10 wickets. England, who had gone out at the Super 8 stage in 2007, finished in the quarter-finals with three wins, a tie and three defeats.
