England: Super 8

How England performed

Michael Vaughan's England, with Duncan Fletcher as head coach, improved on their 2003 pool-stage exit by reaching the Super 8 at the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies. Group C opened with a 6-wicket defeat by New Zealand in Gros Islet, but wins over Canada by 51 runs and Kenya by 7 wickets at the same ground secured progress.

The Super 8 stage brought mixed results. Ireland were beaten by 48 runs in Guyana, before England lost narrowly to Sri Lanka by 2 runs in North Sound, finishing on 233/8 in reply to 235. Australia then won by 7 wickets at the same ground. A 4-wicket win over Bangladesh in Bridgetown was followed by a heavy defeat to South Africa, who dismissed England for 154 and needed only 19.2 overs to win by 9 wickets. England's final match produced their closest result, a 1-wicket victory over West Indies with one ball remaining in pursuit of 301. They finished with five wins and four defeats and went out at the Super 8 stage.
