How England performed
Four years after a pool-stage exit, England won the World Cup for the first time in 2019, on home soil, captained by Eoin Morgan with Trevor Bayliss as head coach. The group stage opened with a 104-run win over South Africa at The Oval, and England's batting set the pace, making 386/6 to beat Bangladesh by 106 runs in Cardiff and 397/6 to beat Afghanistan by 150 runs at Old Trafford. West Indies were beaten by 8 wickets in Southampton. There were setbacks too: Pakistan won by 14 runs at Trent Bridge, and back-to-back defeats followed against Sri Lanka, by 20 runs at Headingley, and Australia, by 64 runs at Lord's. England responded by beating India by 31 runs at Edgbaston and New Zealand by 119 runs at Chester-le-Street.
In the semi-final at Edgbaston, Australia were dismissed for 223 and England won by 8 wickets in 32.1 overs. The final against New Zealand at Lord's could not be separated: England's 241 matched New Zealand's 241/8, the Super Over was also tied, and England were crowned champions on boundary count.
