England: Pool stage

How England performed

For the second World Cup in succession, England did not progress beyond the pool stage in 2003, with Nasser Hussain as captain and Duncan Fletcher as head coach. Their Pool A fixture against Zimbabwe in Harare did not take place: Zimbabwe were awarded the match as a walkover without a ball bowled, and it counted as a defeat in England's record. On the field, England beat the Netherlands by 6 wickets in East London, Namibia by 55 runs in Port Elizabeth and Pakistan by 112 runs at Newlands, where Pakistan were dismissed for 134 in 31 overs.

England then lost their last two pool matches. India made 250/9 at Kingsmead and bowled England out for 168 to win by 82 runs. Against Australia at St George's Park, England posted 204/8, but Australia reached 208/8 with two balls to spare to win by 2 wickets. That left England with three wins and three defeats, and their tournament ended in the pool stage.
