England: Semi-finals

How England performed

England began the 1975 World Cup on home soil in commanding form under captain Mike Denness. In 60-over cricket, they opened their Group A campaign at Lord's with 334/4 against India and won by 202 runs, then beat New Zealand by 80 runs at Trent Bridge. A third victory followed at Edgbaston, where East Africa were dismissed for 94 in reply to 290/5 and England won by 196 runs. Three wins from three group matches, each by a substantial margin, carried them into the semi-finals with a perfect record.

The semi-final against Australia at Headingley proved a very different contest. England were bowled out for 93 in 36.2 overs, and although Australia slipped to 94/6 in pursuit, they reached the target in 28.4 overs to win by 4 wickets. That defeat ended England's tournament at the semi-final stage, with three wins and one loss from their four matches.
