England: Group stage
How England performed
England went through qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil unbeaten, recording six wins and four draws in Group H and scoring 31 goals while conceding four. Rooney led the scoring with seven, the biggest win was 8–0 away to San Marino, and the campaign closed with home victories over Montenegro (4–1) and Poland (2–0).
At the finals, Roy Hodgson's side, captained by Steven Gerrard, lost their opening fixture 2–1 to Italy, Sturridge having equalised two minutes after Italy's opener. A second 2–1 defeat followed against Uruguay, for whom Suárez scored twice either side of Rooney's equaliser. A goalless draw with Costa Rica completed a group-stage exit, with no wins, one draw and two defeats, two goals scored and four conceded. It was a step back from the round-of-16 exit of 2010.
