England: Quarter-finals

How England performed

England qualified for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany with eight wins, a draw and a defeat from ten Group 6 fixtures, scoring 17 and conceding five. Lampard was the leading scorer with five goals, Owen added four, and the only loss was a 1–0 defeat in Northern Ireland.

At the finals, Sven-Göran Eriksson's side, captained by David Beckham, opened with a 1–0 win over Paraguay, settled by an own goal in the third minute, and beat Trinidad and Tobago 2–0 with late goals from Crouch and Gerrard. A 2–2 draw with Sweden, in which J. Cole and Gerrard scored, completed the group, and Beckham's goal beat Ecuador 1–0 in the round of 16. The quarter-final against Portugal finished goalless after extra time, and England lost the penalty shoot-out 3–1. They went out without losing a match in normal or extra time, with three wins and two draws, six goals scored and two conceded, matching the quarter-final finish of 2002.
