England: Quarter-finals

How England performed

England booked their place at the 1962 FIFA World Cup in Chile by going through qualifying Group 6 unbeaten, with three wins and a draw against Luxembourg and Portugal. The campaign opened with a 9–0 win in Luxembourg in which Charlton and Greaves both scored hat-tricks.

In the finals, Walter Winterbottom's side, captained by Johnny Haynes, lost their opening fixture 2–1 to Hungary, Flowers scoring from the penalty spot. They responded by beating Argentina 3–1, with Flowers converting another penalty and Charlton and Greaves also on target, and a goalless draw with Bulgaria took them through to the quarter-finals. There England lost 3–1 to Brazil, Hitchens scoring their goal. With one win, one draw and two defeats, and five goals scored against six conceded, England improved on the group-stage exit of 1958 by reaching the last eight.
