England: Quarter-finals

How England performed

England travelled to the 1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico as winners of the previous tournament in 1966, again under Alf Ramsey and with Bobby Moore as captain. Their group campaign began with a 1–0 win over Romania, Hurst scoring, before a 1–0 defeat by Brazil. A Clarke penalty then secured a 1–0 win over Czechoslovakia, which sent England into the quarter-finals.

There they met West Germany and led 2–0 through goals from Mullery and Peters, only for West Germany to score twice in the second half to force extra time and then win 3–2 with a goal in the 108th minute. England's defence of the title ended at the quarter-final stage, with two wins and two defeats from four matches, four goals scored and four conceded.
