England: Quarter-finals

How England performed

England's qualifying campaign for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by South Korea and Japan, began with a 1–0 home defeat by Germany but brought five wins, two draws and that single loss from eight Group 9 fixtures. The highlight was a 5–1 win in Germany in which Owen scored a hat-trick, and Beckham's stoppage-time goal earned a 2–2 draw with Greece in the final qualifier. Owen finished with six qualifying goals.

At the finals, Sven-Göran Eriksson's side, captained by David Beckham, drew 1–1 with Sweden, Campbell scoring, before a Beckham penalty beat Argentina 1–0. A goalless draw with Nigeria completed the group stage, and England then beat Denmark 3–0 in the round of 16 with goals from R. Ferdinand, Owen and Heskey. Owen gave them the lead in the quarter-final against Brazil, but England lost 2–1. Two wins, two draws and a defeat, with six goals scored and three conceded, represented an improvement on the round-of-16 exit of 1998.
