England: Winners

How England performed

England hosted the 1966 FIFA World Cup, and Alf Ramsey's side, captained by Bobby Moore, went on to win the tournament without losing a match. The group campaign began with a goalless draw against Uruguay, followed by 2–0 wins over Mexico, with R. Charlton and Hunt scoring, and France, where Hunt scored both goals.

Hurst's goal settled a 1–0 quarter-final win over Argentina, and R. Charlton scored twice in a 2–1 semi-final victory over Portugal. In the final England beat West Germany 4–2 after extra time, Hurst completing a hat-trick with goals in the 18th, 102nd and 120th minutes and Peters adding the other. England finished with five wins and a draw from six matches, scoring 11 goals and conceding three, with Hurst scoring four and Hunt and R. Charlton three each. It was a decisive step up from the quarter-final exit of 1962.
