How England performed
The Lionesses qualified for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, with ten wins from ten, scoring 80 goals without conceding. The campaign included a 20–0 win over Latvia and four further 10–0 victories, and Mead was the leading scorer with 13 goals.
At the finals, Sarina Wiegman's side, captained by Millie Bright, won all three group fixtures: 1–0 against Haiti through a Stanway penalty, 1–0 against Denmark with James scoring in the sixth minute, and 6–1 against China, James scoring twice. The round-of-16 tie with Nigeria finished goalless after extra time, and England won the shoot-out 4–2. They came from behind to beat Colombia 2–1 in the quarter-final through Hemp and Russo, and beat the co-hosts, Australia, 3–1 in the semi-final with goals from Toone, Hemp and Russo. The final against Spain was lost 1–0. James, Russo and Hemp each scored three goals, and the runners-up finish improved on the fourth place of 2019.
