England: Quarter-finals

How England performed

The Lionesses went through qualifying for the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup in China unbeaten, with six wins and two draws, 29 goals scored and only two conceded. The campaign included a 13–0 win in Hungary, and K. Smith finished with seven goals, among them hat-tricks against Hungary and the Netherlands.

At the finals, Hope Powell's side, captained by Faye White, drew 2–2 with Japan: K. Smith scored twice in three minutes to turn the game round, but Japan equalised in stoppage time. A goalless draw with Germany followed, and a 6–1 win over Argentina, in which K. Smith again scored twice, took the Lionesses through to the quarter-finals. There they lost 3–0 to the United States, all three goals coming between the 48th and 60th minutes. England finished with one win, two draws and a defeat, eight goals scored and six conceded, with K. Smith their leading scorer on four. It matched the quarter-final finish of 1995.
