England: Quarter-finals

How England performed

The Lionesses qualified for the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany without losing, winning nine and drawing one of their ten qualifiers and scoring 35 goals while conceding four. The campaign opened with an 8–0 win over Malta, and the only dropped points came in a 2–2 draw in Spain.

At the finals, Hope Powell's side, again captained by Faye White, drew 1–1 with Mexico, Williams scoring, and then came from behind to beat New Zealand 2–1 with second-half goals from J. Scott and Clarke. A 2–0 win over Japan, with Yankey among the scorers, completed an unbeaten group stage. In the quarter-final against France, J. Scott put England ahead in the 59th minute, but France equalised two minutes from time and, after a 1–1 draw following extra time, won the penalty shoot-out 4–3. The Lionesses went out without losing a match in normal or extra time, with two wins and two draws, six goals scored and three conceded, matching the quarter-final finish of 2007.
