England: Runners-up

How England performed

England travelled to Japan for the 2019 Rugby World Cup under head coach Eddie Jones and captain Owen Farrell, four years after a pool-stage exit in 2015. Their pool campaign brought three comfortable wins, with only 20 points conceded: 35–3 against Tonga in Sapporo, 45–7 against the United States in Kobe and 39–10 against Argentina in Chōfu.

England then won twice in the knockout rounds, beating Australia 40–16 in Ōita and New Zealand 19–7 in the semi-final at Nissan Stadium in Yokohama, conceding 23 points across the two matches. The final, at the same venue on 2 November, was won 32–12 by South Africa, leaving England as runners-up. Across the tournament they scored 190 points and conceded 75, and their only defeat came in the final.
