How England performed
England qualified for the 1999 Rugby World Cup with two wins at the McAlpine Stadium in Huddersfield in November 1998, beating the Netherlands 110–0 and Italy 23–15. With Clive Woodward as head coach and Martin Johnson as captain, they then began the tournament itself at Twickenham, where their opening three matches brought a 67–7 win over Italy, a 30–16 defeat by New Zealand and a 101–10 victory over Tonga.
A 45–24 win over Fiji at Twickenham followed on 20 October, but four days later England's campaign ended in the quarter-final at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, where South Africa won 44–21. Across their five matches at the tournament England won three and lost two, scoring 250 points and conceding 115. It was an earlier exit than in 1995, when England had finished fourth.
