England: Quarter-finals

How England performed

England's 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand was led by head coach Martin Johnson, with Lewis Moody as captain. They won all four of their pool matches, starting with a narrow 13–9 victory over Argentina at Otago Stadium in Dunedin. Wins over Georgia (41–10) and Romania (67–3) followed at the same venue, before a 16–12 win against Scotland at Eden Park in Auckland completed the pool stage.

That unbeaten pool run did not carry into the knockout stage. England met France in the quarter-final at Eden Park on 8 October and lost 19–12. Their overall record was four wins and one defeat from five matches, with 149 points scored and 53 conceded. The quarter-final exit was a step back from 2007, when England had reached the final and finished as runners-up.
