England: Fourth place

How England performed

England travelled to South Africa for the 1995 Rugby World Cup as the previous tournament's runners-up, with Jack Rowell as head coach and Will Carling as captain. They won all three of their pool matches at Kings Park Stadium in Durban, beating Argentina 24–18, Italy 27–20 and Samoa 44–22.

At Newlands in Cape Town, England beat Australia 25–22 to reach the semi-finals, but New Zealand won the semi-final 45–29 at the same ground. The third-place play-off against France at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria was also lost, 19–9, so England finished fourth. Their record was four wins and two defeats from six matches, and while they scored 158 points, they conceded 146, with 64 of those coming in the two closing defeats. It was a step back from 1991, when England had reached the final.
