Six Nations Championship
England: Champions
How England performed
England defended their title in the 2001 Six Nations with an attacking record that surpassed their 2000 campaign. Under Clive Woodward, with Martin Johnson and Matt Dawson sharing the captaincy, they opened with a 44–15 win over Wales at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff and then ran up 80–23 against Italy at Twickenham. Scotland were beaten 43–3 and France 48–19, both at Twickenham, giving England four wins from four by 7 April.
The final fixture, in Dublin, was not played until 20 October, and Ireland won it 20–14 at Lansdowne Road to deny England a Grand Slam. They nonetheless finished as champions for the second successive season, with four wins and one defeat, scoring 229 points and conceding 80. Their 229 points compared with 183 in 2000, and they passed 40 points in each of their four victories.
