Football European Championship 2000

European Championship 2000

Under manager Kevin Keegan England went into the group stages of Euro 2000 to face on paper what would be one of the tournaments toughest groups as they were joined by Portugal, Romania and old rivals Germany for Euro 2000 which took place in Belgium and Holland.

They kicked off the first match of the campaign in good form taking a 2 goal lead over Portugal within 20 minutes however by half time Humberto Coelho's side had levelled the scoreline. A second half goal by Nuno Gomes saw Portugal win 3-2.

The next game England played bitter rivals Germany and a 53rd goal from Alan Shearer was enough for England to claim all 3 points. The final game of the group stage saw England 2-1 up by half time but a second half goal by Munteanu and a 89th minute penalty caused by Phil Neville's clumsy foul gave all 3 points to Romania and England were out of the tournament without getting past the group stages.

The tournament was eventually won by Group D runners up France as they beat Italy 2-1 at the Feijenoord Stadium in Rotterdam.
